“For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.” — Martin Luther

National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration, marking the start of the winter tree planting season (November to March each year).

Although National Tree Week’s main focus is the planting new trees, it is also about celebrating the woodlands, arboreta and trees that we already have, connecting with the natural world around us and recognising the value of trees in themselves, as well as in terms of wildlife, our wellbeing and future longevity. Below is a list of activities you can do to celebrate National Tree Week.

  • Plant a tree
  • If you can’t plant a tree yourself, please make a donation
  • Come to Queenswood and explore the Arboretum
  • Discover our Champion Trees
  • Explore our trails
  • Adopt a Tree
  • Hug a tree!
  • Read a tree poem
  • Try some bark rubbing
  • Make a collage from the woodland floor
  • Make a pine cone weather station (when the weather is dry the pine cones will open up and when it’s going to rain they will close)
  • Take a walk in your local woodland and count the number of different trees you can see

National Tree Week was first established by the Tree Council in 1975 to support national replanting of trees after the devastating outbreak of Dutch Elm disease.

As action for climate becomes ever more pressing, we must rapidly increase the number of trees being planted across the UK. Nationally, the Government’s target is to achieve 30,000 hectares of new woodland planting per year by 2025.
